Eye Exams

We encourage everyone to get a routine eye exam every year. We offer routine exams by our in house optometrist. A routine eye exam is defined by our insurance carriers as an office visit for the purpose of examining your vision, screening for eye disease, and/or updating eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions. A Routine eye exam by Dr Chang or Dr Nguyen will produce a final diagnosis. This diagnosis can be nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism or any other eye disease you may have.

Do I Really Need An Eye Exam?

Yes, especially if you have existing health problems like high blood pressure, If you have a hard time seeing or reading, if you are frequently looking at a computer or your smart devices. If you have type 1 diabetes, get your eyes checked as soon as possible or at the very latest a few years after your diagnosis. You have a higher risk of having other eye diseases and problems, so it’s important to get an examination.

Children and Adolescents Need Vision Exams Too

Children under 3 will usually have a basic visual check done by their pediatrician but children between the ages of 3yr to 12yr should get checked out at least every 2yrs. We encourage parents to have their child’s first real vision examination before they go into the 1st grade.  If you notice your child has trouble reading, often squints to see or just has any type of problems with their eyes, contact your doctor.

Contact Lens Fitting

At Eye Doctors Hawaii, we do special testing to determine the best contact lenses to fit your eyes properly.  We measure the curve of the cornea for the best and most comfortable fit for you.  We cannot stress how important it is to be properly fitted for your contact lens not only for comfort but the health of the cornea and eyelids are also very important. We evaluate your cornea and eye to ensure complications do not occur with the contact lens we prescribe.  Typically, we give our patients a trial lens at the time of your fitting, to see how you respond to it. A follow up visit, usually a week later is scheduled, at this time we evaluate and check how your eyes are adjusting to the new lenses.

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

What are cosmetic contact lenses? A costume contact lenses or cosmetic contact lenses are contact lenses that change how your eyes look, usually this means color contact lenses. Because of new recent laws the United States, it’s now illegal for anyone to sell cosmetic contact lenses without a prescription from an eye doctor. Because everyone’s eye shape is different, this is a good thing because buying color contact lenses that do not fit your eyes properly can lead to a lot of discomfort and/or further eye complications. Color contact lenses are very trendy so we get more and more patients asking for them, we have no problem selling and or fitting you with color contact lenses in our office.
